Little Lime hydrangeas

It's starting to warm up here in the Midwest....well it was Hot the other day and yesterday was darn right chilly, but spring is definitely here. When the leaves open and the spring flowers are blooming I get excited about getting back into the garden.

This year is all about hydrangeas. I am determined to have them blooming along the porch like this...

BHG

Aren't they the perfect cottage flower? Last year I tried a couple different varieties in the front yard with no luck, they needed so much water and still wilted in the sun. I transplanted them to go on either side of the playhouse since there is some shade from the redbud tree.

After doing a little research I found a brand new shrub called Little Lime hydrangea. They are the dwarf form of the popular Limelight hydrangea.

They will grow to be three to five feet tall and wide and will fit into a small space like mine.

They are drought tolerant, can handle full sun and are the perfect cut Flower.

I planted three along the porch and can't wait for them to cover this area with blooms.

So far so good....I will keep you posted when they bloom this summer. Fingers crossed!

  2. I'll keep my fingers crossed with you. I have no luck with hydrangeas either. We had 2 gorgeous bushes of them when we moved here. Within 2 months, they were dead. I don't know what happened to them. Where did you get yours at? I might try these. Love your front porch and flowerbeds. They look awesome!

  3. So pretty! I have the Endless Summer hydrangeas, and I have no idea what went wrong, but they bloom beautifully but only get about 12" tall. So strange!

    Your flower gardens are beautiful!!

  4. I can't wait to see how these turn out. I have a hydrangea that gives me trouble every year because it's big and gorgeous but wilts about halfway through the day and I have to water the heck out of it! It's in the back of my house mostly in shade, so I can't figure out why it's so fussy. My second one didn't make it this year. I don't think I'll be doing hydrangeas again unless yours work out I might consider them :)

  5. Oh those will be so pretty! I love the lime color. Did you know you can simply change the acid of the soil and the color of the bloom will change? Love that. Ours are coming up a pinkish purple this year (last year they were more a bluish purple). One of my favorite flowers!

  8. Hydrangeas are so beautiful. I had some for years and they quit blooming. I found out my gardner was cutting them back too far and also they need at least 6 hours of sun and mine no longer got the sun for 6 hours. I am going to have to look for this variety, love the idea and they will look amazing with your home. I did a post on how to add charm to the outside of your home on my post today, I think you might enjoy it. If you have time stop by,Kathysue

  10. I love hydrangeas and never heard of those. I planted the everblooming ones called endless summer and have had fantastic luck. They cannot stand full sun though. But I love the blue blooms and you are right, they make the best cut flowers!

  11. I planted a hydrangea last week too! I had a spot under my front porch overhang and it was very sheltered, so I hope it flourishes. My very first Endless Summer, I wonder what color it is going to turn out? It was originally $25 at Home Depot and I caught it on sale for $10- woo!

  16. Here in southern California I was surprised my hydrangeas came so early...I knew it would be earlier than other parts of the country, but I've had gorgeous blooms all over my house for weeks. I love them inside and out and I did not even know they were called "Little Lime" but I'm pretty sure that's what I have. Your garden is gorgeous!!
