The plan is to have cement board siding installed and a portico built over the front door. A trellis will go over the front porch to add more dimension since it's not covered. Adding a covered porch is not in the budget.
My first hurdle is choosing a paint color for the siding. This has become my new obsession. I mean, this will be the color we will have to live with for the next fifteen years. (Cement board siding holds paint longer than wood.)
And what if I choose the wrong one? I've done it plenty of times for the interior of the house...at least that is only a fifty dollar mistake that can be fixed.
My mountain of samples.
I'm leaning towards earthy colors. Here is Renwick Olive by Sherwin Williams on the back of the house. The side of the house looks like a quilt with all the samples painted on.
I have another greenish color drying on the other side of this door as I type. I can't wait to see how it dries.
Here are my inspiration pictures...
I love everything about this portico. The Impatient Gardener
The soffits will be extended with the addition of brackets for a craftsman cottage look.

Trellis and portico together.
Our trellis and trim will be white like this one.
I love the inspiration pictures. It's going to look great!
ReplyDeleteciao...
I like the direction you are going, it will look wonderful with white trim!!Good luck, it feels like such a commitment doesn't it? Kathysue
ReplyDeleteI love your inspiration pictures and I know what you mean about not being able to fix the color once it's done. We painted our lake house a few years ago and the color {gray/blue} is slowly growing on me. If I had the $$$ I would have it redone. Best of luck!

Good luck! I can't wait to see the finished product-those inspiration pictures are gorgeous!
ReplyDeletegood luck and have fun! i know whatever you choose it will look beautiful! i am also a fan of the gray/blue, but i also really like a rich taupe with black shutters.... but gray is what i always come back to. i have a thing for gray or white houses. :)
ReplyDeleteSo fun! We went through this over the early Spring. I was obsessed with exterior home colors and rooftops! I loved the look of the dark gray, but found with the vinyl we couldn't go quite deep enough. I talked with a realtor friend at length, who encouraged me to use earth tones. We ended up with "stone mountain clay" with white trim. I love it. Our shutters are black, and our door will be black soon as well. Hopefully all done next week!
ReplyDeleteWhat an exciting project! Love that bright blue door!

I do wish you luck. I can't wait to see what you choose. It's going to look fabulous I've no doubt.
ReplyDeleteSo exciting! I love all your inspiration.
ReplyDeleteYou have good taste, pick what you are leaning to, you won't be disappointed Londen. I love the craftsmen look of the brackets and overhang.
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! Can't wait to see what you chose.
ReplyDeleteIt will be so wonderful!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you decide to do... i'm sure it will be fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI love the Sherwin Williams palette. I don't have many clients that use it, but I have recommended it too several clients. Love the paint you are considering. Can't wait to see the results. M.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your sweet comment about my "new" soffit inspiration. :) I"d still like to get some molding up there like yours too!!
ReplyDeleteI love the inspirational pictures. :) Earthy colors will look great since that's what our house looks now from the outside, and it looks nice. Mine just needs a little repainting and repairs because it's been years now since we got it checked. We're still planning to cover our porch, which is one of our favorite parts of the house.
ReplyDeleteIt's always scary because your afraid that the color you pick is going to look awful. That blue door of the house you saw us for inspiration is beautiful. I have you pick the color that really suits the siding.
ReplyDeleteI’d go for the last photo for your siding color since it best fits with white. Or, you can play with some shades of grey to have a more earthly tone. It’s been a couple of years, so I bet you’ve already chosen the perfect color for your home. May I know the color that you went with?

Oh, the white trim is nice, and creates a remarkable contrast with any main color! But I always like it better with darker shades. Earthy colors look good to me. :D I wonder why you chose such color scheme. -->Leif
ReplyDeleteNice project you planned there. Choosing the right color is the hardest part for me.
