Kitchen Island Part One

When we bought our house I knew I wanted a kitchen island. In order to have one we had to enlarge the doorway between the living room and kitchen here. The people we bought the house from thought we were nuts! I have some kitchen before pictures coming soon.

When we found our island it was being used as a counter for a cute little shop. It was perfect and just the focal point the house needed. We eat there everyday but things have changed.

The butcher-block top does not hang over so it's not really intended to have chairs pulled up to it. That worked just fine for us, but if your only three feet tall it does not work at all. Without that overhang our little one can't tuck her legs under and is too big to be using her highchair.

So the search is on for a new kitchen island. This has not been an easy task! Especially because the one we have now was found for such a great deal.

Of course I have pictures of  islands I think would work with a little tweaking, all very different....

I love the open feel of this one but would hate to lose the storage.

I think this one from Annie Brahler is so unique and pretty. I love the legs and color but the shape wouldn't work for us. Stay tuned to see what we come up with without breaking the bank. Wish us luck!

  1. Good luck! Ours isn't one we eat at...mostly just for food prep and storage.

  2. Have you ever looked at the 'Just Beachy' blog? She just built an island and it is beautiful. Looks kind of like the first idea pic you have in your post. Take a look...

  4. This island has so much character..love it! Could you put a new countertop on it that extends over one side? That's what we did with ours. Mark extended the countertop so the stools slide under...and we love it. Just a thought! Love the pics! I'd love to see what you did with your soffits too!

  5. The last counter is really unique. We also need a similar set up. So much to do!

  6. Julie,
Our original plan was to extend the top to create an overhang but it would look silly because there are two drawers that we would not be able to access.

Thank you so much for your comments!

  7. Look on craigslist for old kitchen cabinets and trim them out. I built mine from old cabinets. The tip for checking out Just Beachy is great too!

  13. I would adore an island in our kitchen...but we have such a HUGE counter, it somewhat becomes a peninsula. Best of luck for your search my dear. I am sure you will find something even more perfect for your family.

  27. Ooooh. Your island is gawjus!

Are you SURE you can't just put a top on it that comes out maybe 9 inches on one side? Who cares if the drawers aren't accessible (there are so many cases of false drawer fronts in islands anyway)Our Island now...while not beautiful is VERY functional. In our last kitchen we retrofitted an old cabinet with pul out pot and pan drawers...could you retrofit this one?

I love it soo much...tryin' to make it work for you!

Cause...a lot of the islands you showed would have the same prob...no overhang

  28. I really love a beautiful Island bench myself. I am in the middle of designing a new kitchen right now and it has a very versatile and lovely island bench which will not only serve as a kitchen utility bench but also seating for most meals for the family

  29. So many great choices! Can't wait to see what you choose.

  30. That! is a freaking cool island you have there! Could you not go to ikea and get a larger butcher block, remove the old one and add the new one? Hate for you to lose the wonderful one you have. OOPS, did not read above post by Linda at lime in the coconut.....I concur with her!

  31. We did a little test run the other night and took the top of the island off.
The hubby cut some boards we had in the garage to the size we would need for a proper overhang. Our big concern was that it would look silly covering the two drawers on the overhang side. But you know what?? You were right! Not so bad.
We have almost figured out what to do.
    Thanks everyone!
