Winter Pillows

With winter being around the corner, I wanted to cozy up my couch with a couple new pillows. Last spring I bought a few from Pottery Barn and loved them. Once you invest in the pillow inserts buying just the covers can be pretty reasonable. The covers are washable and the down inserts make then perfectly squishy.

After trying out a few different combinations I decided to go with white and off white, now I just need a warm throw blanket and we'll be all set. It's getting pretty chilly here in Chicago and we like to cuddle up on the couch, especially in the morning.

Some of you might be thinking white pillows and kids don't mix very well. But they can...we don't snack or eat anywhere but the kitchen or dining room and hands are clean before we leave the table. Having this one simple rule has kept our furniture in great condition over the years.

We usually don't decorate for Christmas until the day after Thanksgiving, but I wanted a head start this year. It takes me longer than it should to get everything where I want it. I guess that's because I keep moving things around....this table has changed a couple times already. I'm thinking the pine cone needs a little sparkle.

I just found out the secret to get that snowy sparkly look and it's so easy. I'll share it with you soon!

  1. you know growing up we were only allowed to eat at the table and had to wash our hands before and after we ate. what a novel idea! my kids were raised with white slipcovers and the slipcovers were never destroyed. i think you may be on to something here...

also, the pillows look quite cozy.

  5. LOVE!! I have a thing for pillows and blankets. I've stopped collecting them because it seems that the more I bring out, the more they get turned into forts. I really really want that cable knit pillow. It looks SO soft and warm.

  6. Thanks Rachel! The rug is from PB as well. We bought it a couple years ago right before they discontinued it for cheap.

  9. I love the texture of the new covers. You are so smart to enforce the food rule. We have a no food upstairs rule, but mysteriously, I find food wrappers up there. Hmmm.

  11. I love PB pillows. You are so right...once you invest in the down inserts, the covers are very reasonable (look for end of season sales as well). Another thing I've found is that Tuesday Morning carries the same size down inserts for much less!

  13. Pineapple room, it's not a real tray, it's a clock without hands. I'm looking for a cloche to fit on top.

Simply LKJ, thanks for the tip!

  14. Londen, those pillows are great. Love the texture and warmth. Oh and I know exactly what you need, we definitely need blankets on the couch in the morning in the good old Midwest.

  15. The room looks lovely! As a child, my parents had a similar rule about where we could eat and keeping hands clean and off of certain things (like the walls) -- More than 20 years later, they STILL have some of the pieces of furniture I grew up with, and the pieces look as great as ever. There's absolutely nothing wrong with teaching kids how to be respectful of their surroundings ... Kudos!

  16. Your pillows are great and I love your soft holiday touches. I used epsom salts in candle holders last year for the fake snow effect and I liked it!
    Happy Friday to you.

  19. Oh I adore those white pillows! I just got my living room sofa recovered in an off-white duck cloth fabric and was over at the Pottery Barn website this morning looking at the GORGEOUS Christmas pillows to brighten it up for the holidays! I want them all!!!! (My mother would LOVE the fact that you only eat in the kitchen or dining room AND wash up afterwards! Something she has tried to get all of her grandchildren to do for years!)

I got my Matthew Mead magazine yesterday too! Great touch on the coffee table!

  24. I agree kids and white do go together. We only let our children east in the kitchen. No sippies anywhere in the house. Makes it a lot easier in the end.
