Chalkboard Paint, Love It Or Leave It

Chalkboard paint is a trend that some people are done with, but I still can't get enough. Once I start painting something with chalkboard paint I don't want to stop....so what if I got my fix by painting a whole wall? It's definitely nothing new; I've just never been brave enough to do it.

Then I saw this kitchen in the recent Better Homes and Gardens magazine and started thinking about it again. It's so dramatic and useful at the same time.

Tyler Florence's kitchen

It's not an expensive experiment, just a bit time consuming.

One of my favorites from Cottage Living

Anthropologie

I like the idea of a pretty frame drawn right onto the wall.

Janell, from Isabella & Max Rooms had a great idea to hang artwork on her chalkboard wall. You can read her post about it here.

I'm loving this huge tray from Pottery barn, perfect if you don't like the whole wall idea. So what do you think of the trend, love it or leave it?

  1. love it! i actually just told my husband this weekend i am going to repaint our kitchen and paint one wall (where a chalkboard currently hangs) all in chalkboard paint. it's a small kitchen so it won't be as dramatic, but it will be fun for the kids.... and me!

  2. Cassie, I can't wait to see! The wall I have in mind has a framed chalkboard hanging already so I know we will continue to use it.

  3. I adore it! As I was reading this I could not help but gaze into my kitchen and picture our pantry wall covered in doodles by Thurgood. THEN -- my eyes turned to my foyer. Oh...If only I was brave enough to pull a Janell and do our entry like that. Imagine how sweet and endearing it would be for our guests to leave sweet messages to us...coming and going. :)

    Cheers~

  4. I love the look! However, I can't bring myself to do it because I think it would be messy. You never hear anything about chalk dust. If you do it write a follow up about how easy or not it is to clean, including the floor!

  6. I love it! one of the first things I did when I moved into our home was to do a chalkboard wall, I also framed it out. It is just a little wall on the side of the pantry, but after looking at that first picture I kinda wish I had gone for a larger wall ;)

  7. Love chalkboard paint although I haven't done any walls in our new home, we did have a door in our old home. I do however have chalkboards throughout our home, they are just plain fun!

  10. LOVE IT! I just did some chalkboard painting this weekend! I love the chalk ink markers from michaels. I like the idea of both the chalk ink and regular chalk together!

  11. Love it! I too was looking around the kitchen to see where I could add some more. I have two Ikea chalkboards under the bay window in my kitchen (behind the island). We use them constantly...great for reminders and spelling words! I also have it on the pantry door...it's reserved for funny quotes. A wall would be fantastic! I missed the BHG pic...but the others are all in my files. :)

  12. Well, I LOVE IT, too! I have been itching to try it on something, but just haven't found the right object, but it's coming...

  13. It's love for me too! The small wall (tall and narrow) just outside our refrigerator may be getting some chalkboard paint at some point. I don't know if I could commit to a whole wall, although I do like Janell's art on her wall.

  14. I am still in love with it. I am still flirting with putting a wall in my son's big boy room {the dust scares me a bit with him}. They have sooo much personality and can be transformed in so many ways. And all of the great colors now are so tempting. That's a long answer for, "Take it!"

  15. I love these photos!!! I adore chalkboard paint, too. My five year old will have an entire wall of 'chalkboard' soon. My dining room has a 3' X 6' framed chalkboard and our family room has a space of 5' x 10' covered with chalkboard paint too. What a great post! Reading your blog is like going to a bookstore and getting a cup of coffee and soaking in inspiration for awhile... Thanks for sharing it! blessings

  18. I adore that first image - it looks SO effective. I think you should definitely give a chalkboard wall a go!

  19. definitely LOVE it! i'm a big fan of doing doors (both of my two recent kitchens couldn't handle that much on an entire wall - too dark). but the tray - that I'm going to do soon! plus ... trends - who needs 'em. you just have to keep what you have long enough - eventually it comes back. just be yourself :)

  20. I love it... although I have yet to paint something with it :-/

  21. Love it, and yes, we have painted an ENTIRE wall in our teen daughter's bedroom with it (or our painters did). The dust is relative to how often they erase and change what is on there. She typically changes her sayings, homework assignments and calendar on hers once a week, so not too bad. It mostly ends up on the top of the baseboard and with a quick sweep of the vaccum wand, it is up in no time. Beware, colored chalk will make a bit more of a mess...but it's still not too bad. It does however take at least 3 coats (rolled) to get good coverage, then it has to cure for at least 3 days, then be seasoned...THIS IS THE REALLY MESSY PART, but you only have to do it once. While the paint is not that expensive, it isn't as cheap as regular paint and remember it takes several coats. We had set out to have the wall be magnetic as well, but it didn't work as planned. You can read about it here:

I have a smaller framed chalkboard I made in our kitchen that I love, we really didn't have a good "wall" for one in there.

  22. I love it! We painted my niece's playroom wall with blue chalkboard paint. It's not as drastic or dark as black, and it keeps her from writing on other walls!

  23. I love it! And with the chalk markers you can have a lot of fun with it.

  24. I love it! I think it's a fun easy way to add a lot of charector. My family has a cabin that is very 70's and needs updated. I painted a wall in the kitchen with chalkboard paint and it looks great.

  25. I am of the firm believe that one can never have to many chalkboards!
    I love it!

  26. You know I love the trend and am so happy with my chalkboard wall in the powder bath. I love shouting through the door to my friends "don't forget to sign your name on the bathroom wall"...they think I'm a little crazy but they sign it anyway. ;)
    Hugs~

  28. I love the chalkboard look! My daughter has been suggesting the chalkboard idea for my cottage fixer-upper kitchen. Seeing your pictures has inspired me. Thank you!

  29. I like it, but with three messy little girls I'm too chicken to try it.

  30. I loooove it! I haven't done a wall...but I did a big mirror and have several other small ones throughout my home:)

  31. There seems to be a lot of love out there for chalkboard paint. As far as painting an entire wall...as you know, I am on the fence!

  32. Personally I still LOVE it! I'm big on the written word - in any form - and I love being able to write messages!

  33. Thanks for the shout out and love a chalkboard wall!!

As for dust, we use an old fluffy towel to wipe the chalkboards and it picks up most of the dust so hasn't been an issue!

  34. I love it and want so badly to give it a try myself. But hubby HATES it!

  35. I have to say...its a little of both for me. I love that you can now get it tinted in colors, because I am not sure a black wall is for me but the mess kills me. Ugh. Dust. It one more thing I have to clean up! Lol!

But for aesthetic purposes...I think it is so fun!

  36. Love it! I adore the look of chalkboard paint and it's MANY uses, it looks great in every home!

  37. I really love that first image and am tempted to do that in my kitchen. I just really think the dust might get on my nerves quickly. . .It probably wouldn't help our awful allergies around here :)

  38. Love it!Love it!Love it!
When we start our kitchen/entry makeover(our house is very open)I will DEFINITELY be incorporating some chalkboard paint into the room!

  39. I know I'm late to this party, but just wanted to say that I've been thinking about doing a chalkboard wall myself.

I know, though, that this trend is probably going to lose it's appeal in a little while, so if I do it, I'm thinking I'll paint a piece of very thin board (we've actually used shower board in the past), cut to my wall dimensions (I'm just looking at a narrow wall in a hallway) and paint that with chalkboard paint. Then, when I'm done with it, I can just take the board down and I won't have to paint over all that black!

  40. I like it, but seems like it could get messy. My sister bought a house with a big built in white board in the kitchen, and thought it was fabulous at first, but is now longing to take it down!
