Channeling Martha

First of all, thank you for all of your feedback about the chalkboard wall; it was fun reading everyone's comments. I've decided to go for it as soon as I get some time. Right now I'm in a nesting mood and want to deep clean and organize everything in site. The cold weather will be here soon and we will be inside a lot more. I think I better keep going so I don't loose my enthusiasm.

I found a couple good organizing ideas from Martha...

Martha Stewart

We have a very dysfunctional back hallway that we use on a daily basis. I dream of having a big mudroom with all the trimmings someday, for now I'm collecting ideas to make ours function better. I love this metal mailbox idea to hold keys and stuff from the day. The magazine holder makes a perfect coat hook.

This is another great idea for our guests that use the front door. Rectangular baking sheets would be a perfect place for wet shoes. When you're done with them, wash them and put them away for next time. I will be doing this for sure.

Oh, and remember the leaf garland I made and hot glued onto the mantel? Well, a few of you were curious to see how it held up and if the hot glue came off ok. I used a plastic spatula to scrape the glue off and it worked perfectly. The leaves looked good for three days; I left mine up for about a week. If I was having Thanksgiving dinner at my house I would definitely make another one, it was so easy.

Is anyone else channeling Martha?

  1. I'm LOVING that first image. I actually have a little white and silver mailbox that I use to catch things... it's just sitting on a console, but I love those mounted. Good stuff as usual. :) Erica

  3. Kerry, that is exciting! Our front door opens right into our living room so I can totally relate.

  4. I love that baking sheet idea. I keep the kids rain boots in our bottom cubby {just like that} and that would be perfect. Love me some Martha. Thanks for the idea.

  5. Thats a great idea for the hallway...a mailbox to hold your keys! How smart is that, and it looks pretty good too. I guess you could have one mailbox per person in the household!

  6. i'm not right now but you bring back so many memories of trying to keep 3 boys organized. the amount of paperwork, backpacks, shoes, etc. can drive a mother insane. that's my excuse at least.

  8. I too would love a mudroom! We have a very small entry way off our garage, three doors in a 5X5 space to be exact! I am in the organization mode too...I would love to relax a bit more this holiday season. Love the baking pan idea. My friend Ashli (mailardville manor) placed a similar boot tray in her entry with river rocks for the drainage...beautiful!

  9. Hi Londen,
What a great way to conserve space! We normally come in and out of the house through the garage instead of the front door, but we have no mudroom. Things tend to pile on the table right next to the door. These photos are great inspiration for getting on the ball with our organization!

    Have a good weekend!

  10. Ok...Martha always does it best...with all her helpers! I too dream of a functional mudroom, which I don't have at the moment! I love the idea of using baking trays! Why didn't I think of that? Good luck with your nesting and organizing! I know how you feel. I have been getting rid of so much and organizing my home too!

  15. Love the boot tray idea. I am constantly fighting clutter so I welcome any way to organize! I don't know about the mailbox idea, I think I would end up rummaging through them for stuff? I like to see the junk I guess. Wishing you and La Petite a wonderful weekend~

  18. I was just reading my new Martha mag yesterday! I love having a place for shoes right by the door, but never thought of using a cookie sheet! But she's right, it's the perfect size. I had been considering one I saw at Ballard's . . .

  19. We never use the front door so if a stranger
rings I have to find my way between at least
10 pair of shoes including sport and ballet things.I think I go and visit your Martha!

  21. Martha is the queen of organization. I need to channel her more often. Our problem is that my family doesn't really use the hooks and baskets that way they are supposed to ;)
